What is Fast HQWK?

Fast HQWK is simply the most powerful QWK-door for the MBBS. It offers
you the ability to do all your BBSing off line, which of course will
reduce your phone bill drastically compared to any online alternatives.

HQWK is compatible with any standard QWK-reader, and has proven to work
fine even with some no-standard readers. HQWK utilizes most extended
QWK-definitions, like the PCB extended message headers, so you will get
the most by using an up to date reader.

In addition, HQWK introduces a whole new concept to the MBBS. A graphic
user interface! HQWK enables use of rich text, graphics, and file links
in messages. To be able to use these functions you need the HyperSoft
software for Windows/Win95/NT (see the end of this message for info).

Why should you use HQWK?

HQWK offers the fastest way to exchange information with MBBS.
HQWK has more offline options than any other mail door.
HQWK enables a graphic user interface to MBBS.
HQWK enables you to spend the least time online.
HQWK is user friendly and very easy to use.
HQWK is available at many BBSes.

HQWK uses a series of optimization techinques to squeeze the most
speed out of any process. HQWK grabs/installs messages and lists
files faster than any other mail door available, even twice as fast
as MBBS itself.

HQWK offers a heap of commands you should use if you wish to do
more than just exchange messages. HQWK can upload and download
files, search for files and messages, enter your resum, send away-
notifications, user information, and general BBS-statistics. HQWK
also provides many special commands for BBS SigOps and SysOps.

Fast HQWK user hints:

 Mail servers:

  Writing original messages:
The following applies to original messages only, not to replies!

When writing original messages directly to a mail server, enter
your messages to <username> <mailserver>. For example, to enter
a message to jan@exit.bbs.se through the EMAIL mail server, write:

    jan@exit.bbs.se EMAIL

If the user name and mail server name does not fit inside the 25
character To-field, just enter noting or '-' in the To-field and
'To: <username> <mailserver>' on the very first line of your
    message, like this:

    To: oeyvind.gaanaasviken@priesthouse.betlehem.is EMAIL

If you want HQWK to remove this first line before the message is
sent, just exchange 'to' with 'xto', like this:

    XTO: oeyvind.gaanaasviken@priesthouse.betlehem.is EMAIL

  Writing replies:
Replies are easy, just reply to the message and do not care
about who the message is TO - HQWK finds that out itself by
checking who the message you reply to is FROM.

 Extended headers:

If your QWK-reader shows a lot of news/fido messages like this
  in the first message lines:

   @TO     :USERNAME@MACHINE.HOST.EXT
   @FROM   :USERNAME@MACHINE.HOST.EXT

then your QWK-reader is either hopelessly outdated, or the people
who programmed it do not know anything about the extended headers.
Please get another reader, or tell the reader programmers to move
their product into the current century.

 Pointer files:

With every QWK-packet, HQWK includes a pointer file called
<BBSID>.PTR. This file contains information on where your message
pointers were in all conferences before your last grab. If you
should loose your MESSAGES.DAT file, or if it gets damaged somehow
you may use the pointer file to reset the message pointers to their
previous state, and then download a new QWK-packet.

To reset message pointers, simply include the <BBSID>.PTR file in
your next REP-file to the BBS. Or, if you do not have a REP file
available, just select [UP]load from the HQWK menu on the BBS and
  upload the PTR-file instead of a REP-file.

 Character sets:

HQWK will use the character set you have defined for use in MBBS
when dumping/installing messages. You should consider this when
using HQWK, or your messages will turn out bad both for you and
  for people reading your messages.

Also, your reader might not be compatible with strange character
sets. This is especially true for some PC-readers.

It is fairly easy to see if your character set is correct. If you
seem to receive all kinds of strange special charactes in messages
where there normally should be special scandinavian (or line
drawing) characters - you are probably not using the correct
  character set.

To fix this problem, enter the MBBS command line, and give the
"U S ?" command. Then select the character set that looks right
  for you.

If you use a PC, and a DOS reader (or a Windows or OS/2 reader
using a 865 terminal font) the correct character set for you
should be 'IBN'. If you use a PC, but do not use a DOS reader
or 865 fonts, then you should probably use ISO unless your
reader is capable of translating to other sets by itself.

If you do not use a PC, there are 13 different variations of
character sets to choose from - but if your reader can emulate
the PC-8 character set you should probably use IBN or IBM.

 First time on a system:

The first time you use HQWK on a BBS, HQWK will attempt to grab
the complete file list (or as much of it as SysOp allows), all
available bulletin lists, all available messages, and statistics
for the system, SysOps resum (if available), all standard QWK-
files and the full conference list. This information should be
nice, as it gives an easy overview of the entire BBS in just one
  single grab!

HQWK will also provide a fast and easy way to multijoin
conferences by listing all available conferences with the ADD
command in front in a message to you in Post. Just reply to this
message and delete the conferences you do not want to join, and
HQWK will do the rest next time you log on.

 Breaking sessions:

You can break any message grab session and any file scan session
online, by pressing the ESC-key. File scan sessions will terminate
immediatly, while message grab sessions will complete grabbing the
  current conference before terminating.

You will receive as much of the file list and as many messages as
  was grabbed.

 Downloading files:

When you order files through HQWK, the files are copied to your
HOLD-directory before they are sendt to you. This means comfort
and security - as the files will not be part of your QWK-packet,
and even if the download should be terminated somehow, the files
will still be available in the HOLD directory anyway.

Fast HQWK commands:

Note: If you are using HyperReder, HQWK commands are easily issued
by selecting desired functions from menus. In that case you
do not have to read the rest of this file.

The numerous offline functions available to HQWK users demands that
we first take a look at the command overview. If possible, you should
send this quick overview to your printer.

Hint: You may enter any number of commands in a single command message,
it is _not_ neccessary to enter a message for each command.

To send a command or a list of commands you must write a message to
"HQWK" with any subject, then enter each command on a line of its own
in the message.

Special commands:

The special commands may require that you enter more text than is
available on a single line. For these commands to work you must
write a message to "HQWK" with the command itself in the message
subject, then enter any text in the message body. The UL command
will also require some parameters on the very first lines in the
message body. Parameters marked with * are optional.

In subject In message text Optional

Command message example:

An example command message could contain the following text:

DL W95DRV1.ZIP
DL W95DRV2.ZIP
ADD General/Cars
DROP General/Motorcycles
SEEK Game
LIMIT MSGS 3000000

This message would, if sent, tell HQWK that you want to download the
two files W95DRV1.ZIP and W95DRV2.ZIP, join the General/Cars conference,
resign from the General/Motorcycles conference, seek for any files
regarding games, and set the maximum ammount of bytes in messages you
wish to receive for each grab. Fast and easy, isn't it!

Commands explained:

  Message commands:

    ADD <conference name>
Makes you a member of any given conference, provided you have
      access to the conference.

      Example: ADD General/Chat

    DROP <conference name>
Removes you from any given conference, provided you were a
      member of it.

      Example: DROP General/Chat

    SET <conference name> <[+/-]message number>
Sets your last read pointer in a conference. You may use this
pointer in many ways, for example if you wish to reread some
of the older messages in the conference you could decrease the
pointer, or if you know that many messages are unread an you do
not want to read them, you could skip them by increasing the
      pointer.

      Examples:
To set the pointer to an actual message number (say 2263):
        SET alt.books.stories 2263
To move the pointer 100 messages back:
        SET General/Cars -100
To move the pointer 50 messages forward:
        SET General/Chatbox +50

    MSG <conference name> <message number>
Orders any message from any conference. Say you asked about
something, and someone told you to look at message #234 in
Programming/Pascal. The following command example would get
      you that message.

      Example: MSG Programming/Pascal 234

    SEARCH <conference name> <search msgs> <get msgs> <keyword>
SEARCH is a powerful command which locates messages by searching
      message subjects in a conference.

HQWK starts at the last message in the conference, and searches
the <search msgs> number of messages backwards. (If the <search
msgs> parameter is 0, all message subjects in the conference are
      searched).

The <get msgs> parameter specifies the number of matching
messages to automaticly send back to you. If HQWK finds more
message subjects containing the specified keyword, it will send
you a Post message with a list of these. So, if the <get msgs>
parameter is 0, you will receive a list of messages only.

Note: <get msgs> is limited to 100 messages.

      See also: LIMIT LIST

      Examples:
To get 5 messages conatining the word 'Modem' in the subject
from the last 200 messages in the General/Ads conference:
        SEARCH General/Ads 200 5 Modem
To get only a list of messages with the word 'Disk' in the
message subject from the last 10000 messages in the
        Tech/Hardware conference:
        SEARCH Tech/Hardware 10000 0 Disk
To search all messages in General/Cars for the word 'Mustang'
in the message subject, and to get the last 50 of these:
        SEARCH General/Cars 0 50 Mustang

    PACKING <ZIP/ARJ/LZH>
Allows you to define the archive format of your QWK/REP-files.
This parameter equals the MBBS "U AF" command.

Default: Whatever packing you defined for MBBS grab.

      Example: PACKING ZIP

    RESUME (in the subject)
You should always enter a resum message about yourself. This
message can be read by other users with the USERINFO command,
just as you yourself can use the USERINFO command to read any
      resum written by other users.

      See also: USERINFO, AWAY

(See 'Special commands' for sending instructions).

    AWAY (in the subject)
If you go away for a while, you should enter a message to warn
other users that you will not be reading messages for a while.
This message will be shown to any user who writes messages to
you while you are away. Remember to issue a NOTAWAY command
      (see below) when you return!

      See also: NOTAWAY, RESUME

(See 'Special commands' for sending instructions).

    NOTAWAY
Removes your previously written away message (see above).

      See also: AWAY

      Example: NOTAWAY

    USERINFO <username>
Get a users resum and other information. When issuing the
userinfo command, you will receive a Post message from HQWK
containing the resum and other available information on the
requested user. SigOps and SysOps will receive more info.

      See also: RESUME, AWAY

      Example: USERINFO Ola Nordmann

    DELETE <conference name> <message number>
This command deletes a message. You may only delete messages
written by yourself, or messages in a conference in which you
are the SigOp, or if you are a SysOp.

      Example: DELETE Post 28812

  File commands:

    FILEINFO <filename>
Get the file info message for a file. When issuing the fileinfo
command, you will receive a Post message from HQWK containing
any available information on the requested file.

      Example: FILEINFO WINGS.ZIP

    SEEK <keyword>
Locate files in the BBS file list by keyword scan. When issuing
a seek command, you will receive a Post message from HQWK
containing a list of matching files.

      See also: LIMIT LIST

      Example: SEEK HyperSoft

Note: This is keyword scan, not file scan. Use of wildcards like
'?' and '*' will not work. Both the file name and the file
comment will be scaned for the keyword.

    DL <filename>
Download a file from the BBS file list. You need to have access
to the file to download it.

      See also: LIMIT AUTO

      Example: DL MOUSE.ZIP

      Note:
The files you wish to download are copied to the HOLD-directory
of your MBBS node. After HQWK has sent your QWK-packet, it will
automaticly send any files in the HOLD directory to you.

If you, for some reason, should break the transfer - the files
will still be available in this directory for download, and you
will be warned of this if you attemt to leave the BBS without
      downloading all the files.

    UL (in the subject)
Upload a file with an optional file info message to the BBS. You
must supply a 'Name:' parameter on the first line of the message
text, and a file by that name must be in the REP-file. On the
second line, enter 'Desc:' followed by a short description of
      the file (max. 40 characters).

      The Private/Notify/Conference/Directory parameters are all
optional, and if you do NOT supply some of these, HQWK will
default to the following for each parameter:

No Private -> File is public
No Notify -> No download notification is needed
No Conference -> File is not private to any conference
No Directory -> File is to be put in the upload directory

Read the examples below for information on access restrictions
for the Conference and Directory parameters.

      See also: FILEINFO

      Examples:
This is an example message text for uploading a public file
with notify and a file info message attached to it:

        Name: BEEP.ZIP
        Desc: Annoying program
        Notify

This file contains a small program that says "BEEP BEEP BEEP"
when you run it - very annoying. Give it to someone you hate.

This is an example message to upload a private file, to Hans
Hansen, without download notification or a file info message.

        Name: PRIVATE.ZIP
Desc: Secret information regarding your toilet
        Private: Hans Hansen

If you have upload access in a conference, you may make your
files available only to members with download access in the
same conference. Here is an example, with file info:

        Name: WIN96B02.ZIP
        Desc: WIN96 beta
        Conference: Beta/Windows96

The latest WIN96 beta, I made it myself yesterday!

If you have SysOp access in the main conference, you may upload
files directly into a suitable file directory. Again, here is
        an example with info:

        Name: HQWKPIC.ZIP
        Desc: Picture of HQWK
        Directory: Pictures/BMP

A picture of a computer running HQWK.

Note: Please remember to place a blank line between the
parameter lines and the file info text. HQWK will
not recognize the file info text as text if this
            blank line is missing.

(See 'Special commands' for more sending instructions).

    LISTDATE <YYMMDD>
List new files uploaded to the BBS after the date as specified
in YYMMDD. LISTDATE 000000 will send the whole file list.

Note: The file list is appended to the NEWFILES.DAT file which
most QWK-readers have options to display.

      See also: NEWFILES

      Example: LISTDATE 950901

    VIEW <filename>
View the contents of a file. HQWK currently supports viewing ZIP
and LZH files. Support for other files may be added later. When
issuing a view command, you will receive a Post message from HQWK
      containing the list of files.

      See also: LIMIT LIST

      Example: VIEW BINGO.ZIP

  Subscribing commands:

    HELP
The HELP-command will simply cause HQWK to send you the most
recently updated version of this help file.

    FULLCONF <ON/OFF>
If your QWK-reader supports it, you may tell HQWK to send you a
reduced conference list, listing only the conferences in which
you have received new messages. This may have some disadvantages,
so do not reduce the list unless you know what you are doing.

      Default: ON

The command for reducing the conference list is:
      FULLCONF OFF

To reenable a full conference list, issue the command:
      FULLCONF ON

    STATS <ON/OFF>
Subscribe to the HQWK statistics. The statistics are sent to you
in a Post message from HQWK every time you grab messages. The
number of available statistics depends on how the BBS is
      configured.

      Default: OFF

The command to make HQWK start sending you statistics is:
      STATS ON

To stop HQWK from sending you statistics, issue the command:
      STATS OFF

    BULLETINS <OFF/ASCII/ANSI>
Subscribe to bulletins of any type. Parameter ASCII sends only
bulletins in plain ASCII format, and ANSI sends bulletins in
ANSI color or in ASCII if no ANSI bulletin was available.

Note: All available bulletins will be sent when you subscribe,
after that only new and updated bulletins are sent.

      Default: OFF

To get bulletins, issue one of the following:
      BULLETINS ASCII
      BULLETINS ANSI

To make HQWK stop sending bulletis, issue the command:
      BULLETINS OFF

NEWFILES <ON/OFF> (also part of the autodownload feature)
Subscribe to the BBS file list. If you use this function, a list
of new files since your last new file scan is sent to you every
time you grab messages. The list of new files is called
NEWFILES.DAT and will be placed in your QWK-packets. Most QWK-
readers have functions for displaying this plain ASCII file.

      Default: OFF

To subscribe to the file list, issue the command:
      NEWFILES ON

      To unsubscribe, isse the command:
      NEWFILES OFF

Note: Before the HQWK private file autodownload feature can work,
NEWFILES must be ON and LIMIT AUTO must be set > 0.

      See also: LIMIT AUTO, LISTDATE

    GETFTYPE <1-6>
Get standard QWK-file types. Issue this command when you want to
include standard QWK file types in your QWK-packets. By default
you will receive all standard QWK file types, and you should not
have any use for this command unless you have previously issued a
NOTFTYPE command (see below) to HQWK.

      The file types:

        1 - The xxx.NDX and PERSONAL.NDX files
        2 - The DOOR.ID file
        3 - The SESSION.TXT file

  Limiting commands:

    LIMIT MSG <0 - 1000000>
     Set single message byte limit.

Default: Whatever SysOp has set as a maximum is default.

      Example:
If you do not wish to ever receive a single message containing
more than 500KB of information, enter:
      LIMIT MSG 500000.

    LIMIT MSGS <0 - 10000000>
     Set total messages byte limit.

Default: Whatever SysOp has set as a maximum is default.

      Example:
If want HQWK to stop grabbing messages once the total size of the
grabbed messages excceeds 2MB of information, enter:
      LIMIT MSGS 2000000.

    LIMIT OBJ <0 - 1000000>
Set single object byte limit. This refers to external objects like
bitmaps, sounds and rich text messages.

Note: You will still receive the message this object is linked to.

Default: Whatever SysOp has set as a maximum is default.

      Example:
If you do not ever wish to receive any single object larger than
      200KB, enter:
      LIMIT OBJ 200000.

    LIMIT OBJS <0 - 10000000>
     Set total objects byte limit.

Default: Whatever SysOp has set as a maximum is default.

      Example:
To stop the grab process when the total ammount of bytes consumed
by bitmaps, sounds and rich text messages excceeds 2MB, enter:
      LIMIT OBJS 2000000.

    LIMIT AUTO <0 - 10000000>
Autodownload private files byte limit. HQWK can autodownload
files uploaded privatly to you. LIMIT AUTO sets the maximum size
in bytes for files that may automaticly be downloaded by HQWK.

LIMIT AUTO 1500000 would allow files up to 1.5MB to be
autodownloaded, while LIMIT AUTO 0 would turn the autodownload
      feature completely off.

Private files exceeding the LIMIT AUTO-limit will have to be
downloaded manually by issuing a DL command.

Note: For the autodownload feature to work at all, you must be
subscribing to the new files list (see NEWFILES).

      Default: 512000 (512KB)

      See also: NEWFILES, DL

      Example: LIMIT AUTO 2000000

    LIMIT LIST <10 - 300>

list. You may limit the number of items listed in a list
message by using the LIMIT LIST command.

      Default: 300 items

  SigOp commands:

SigOp commands gives functionality to conference administrators
and SysOps. Each command is conference specific, and you need
at least SigOp-access in a conference to issue a command there.

    INSTBULL <conference name> <bltname> <bltnr>
Install a bulletin. The <bltname> is the name of the bulletin
file which must be included in the REP-packet. The bulletin
can have any name in the REP-packet, but the extension *must*
follow MBBS rules for extensions. The rules are:

(no extension) = English ASCII bulletin
       .N                    = Norwegian ASCII bulletin
       .GR                   = English ANSI bulletin
       .GRN                  = Norwegian ANSI bulletin
..and so on for other languages

The <bltnr> defines the bulletin number, but if <bltnr> is 0
(zero) the file will be installed as the bulletin list. You
should always install a bulletin list before installing any
      other bulletins.

      Example:
To install a Norwegian ASCII bulletin as bulletin #2 in
General/Ads (and you have called the bulletin file AAA.N) enter:
      INSTBULL General/Ads AAA.N 2

HyperSoft:

HyperSoft is developing a complete Windows/WIN95/NT communications
package which consists of the HyperReader and HyperComm programs.

HyperReader is an offline reader for Windows/WIN95/NT, which supports
  standard QWK, SOUP and MBBS-grabfiles.

HyperComm is a serial communications program for Windows/WIN95/NT,
which features a powerful yet easy to use graphical script language.

Both HyperReader and HyperComm supports graphics, sounds, and external
objects attached to messages. But, one major problem up till now has
been that the most popular BBS system in Norway, MBBS, supports none
  of these.

This is where HQWK steps in. HQWK contains the functionality needed to
implement external objects in MBBS. By doing this, HQWK creates a real
graphical environment inside the BBS without making any changes to the
system itself. Users not using HyperReader and HyperComm will not notice
or be affected by the new graphical environment, but a whole new world
will open to those who do.

HQWK, HyperReader and HyperCom all work together to make your offline
life a breeze, the way it should be!

When this message was written (1/3/96), HyperReader and HyperCom are
being betatested. A release version is expected at the end of March,
so if this date has passed you should be able to get your hands on a
free shareware version the software, if not you have to be patient!

Call the HyperSoft support BBS for more information on HyperSoft
  software. MBBS, all speeds supported, +47 22 71 51 07.
